5 Ways to Get A Retail Buyer to Love your Product



We have designed packaging for established brands launching a new product into their line as well as start up companies trying to establish themselves in a crowded market. One of the biggest hurdles to getting product on to a shelf is selling the product to a category buyer at the retailer. Here are some ways to help get your product on shelf and into the hands of your customers:

  1. Do your homework. Go visit the retail stores you are interested in and take note of  how the product is merchandised on shelf. If most products are pegged and you are thinking of designing a box that sits on the shelf, rethink your strategy. Show the buyer that you understand your category.
  2. Size Matters. There is a delicate balance between over packaging a small product so you increase the product's presence on shelf, and working withing a store's planogram. Buyers want to be able to have as many product facings as possible in a limited space. Make sure your product fits within the product category. You may be tempted to design an odd shape or size to get your product to stand out but you must work within the confines of the space you will be merchandised.
  3. Be Prepared. When you land that face-to-face meeting with the buyer come prepared. Know your competition and how you can position your product against them at retail. Present how your product fills a void in their product offering. Also, know your price point and discount level. If you don't have a manufactured package, bring a prototype with the product inside. In addition, show how your product would look on shelf in their store.
  4. Design Packaging That Sells. Your package is a silent sales person. It is a given that it should represent your brand and protect your product. In addition, it should provide a reason to buy your product and tout it's competitive advantages. All this should be done in a succinct fashion.
  5. Know Sales Potential. If you want to come armed with sales potential, try selling your product on-line first before you you approach a brick-and-mortar store. If you don't want to go this route, do an on-line survey to uncover sales potential and present this to the buyer.

New and Not Necessarily Improved

A story in the March 3, 2009 issue of the LA Times regarding the unfavorably received new Pepsi brand redesign reminded me of another recent unsuccessful redesign—the one for Tropicana orange juice. A few months ago, I was in a Target store buying some orange juice. I usually get the Tropicana brand, and was disappointed when I didn't see any in the cases. I just saw a bunch of unfamiliar cartons that I immediately wrote off as "not Tropicana" and kept looking around. It was only during a second pass that I realized that these new cartons were indeed Tropicana. Wow, I thought, that's a pretty radical new look. Gone were any vestiges of familiarity--the funky old-style logo, and especially the orange with the straw stuck in it. The new carton is dominated by a large shot of a tasteful-looking (not necessarily tasty-looking) glass of orange juice, with the word "Tropicana" in an unfamiliar sans serif font and green color turned 90ยบ clockwise along the side. Let Your Packaging Sell Your Product, Not a Funny Name!

So I ran across this product while I was traveling in NY and needed some earplugs.  I can't sleep without them. Earplugs are notoriously hard to find on shelf so I had to scan many products. I came across this product and got quite a chuckle. I don't think I need to explain why (To be fair, it was awhile ago, and the package design could have changed since then.): Zim's Crack Creme---we can assume that Zim is the pharmacist who created this all-natural herbal wonder cream (creme) for your crack. Or is that really what this means. Surly it couldn't. We design packaging and I couldn't help but analyze this package as I would for a client. The first thing we help our clients do is to prioritize the elements on the front of the package. What is the most important thing to communicate? The name? The brand? The why-to-buy? The features?
